The only thing I can think of that I've had to give up are things that were not good for me to begin with. I do have to be careful with allowing what I do become an idol. I am reminded that I am a human being not a human doing even though I am very much wired to be doing something and it is difficult for me to be still and know that He is God.

Good point, Jesse! Most of the 'things' I gave up were obviously for my own good.

Dan and I adopted our girls out of obedience to God, and it has been extremely “costly” in so many ways (finances, time, “space” in our home and our lives, emotions, etc). Dan and I didn’t respond to a long-standing call on our lives or burden for orphans. We didn’t long for girls because God gifted us with only boys. We were quite content as a family of four. BUT GOD specifically put it on our hearts to go get Sasha, and then when we were there, to get Liz, as well. We depleted our savings, completed more paperwork than I’ve perhaps had to fill out in the 15 years combined since the adoption, and flew to Russia to get the girls.
